What Does the Death of Charlie Kirk Mean for the Future of Freedom?

Charlie Kirk was an American political activist, author, and media personality who was assassinated on September 10th, 2025. He was a major advocate of freedom of speech and non-violent dialogue.

But, I’ve been noticing throughout social media that since his murder, there have been calls from many government officials encouraging harsh punishment for anyone who says, writes, and/or shares negative things about him or has otherwise been pleased that he is dead.

Many who are considered on “the right” have been encouraging this and have been applauding this, while many who are on “the left” are now concerned. Here are a few such reports ──
Pam Bondi Defends 'Hate Speech' Crackdown After MAGA Backlash

Published Sep 16, 2025

Attorney General Pam Bondi defended her move to crack down on “hate speech” in the United States after the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, saying threats of violence are federal crimes under the U.S. Constitution.

Bondi has faced a backlash over free speech concerns from MAGA voices online since vowing to take action, who see it as an attempt to stamp out protected speech under the First Amendment.

There has been a hunt for retribution in the aftermath of Kirk’s killing, with conservatives highlighting individuals who have celebrated his death and alerting their employers. Others have surfaced examples of individuals making threats of political violence. …

“For far too long, we’ve watched the radical left normalize threats, call for assassinations, and cheer on political violence. That era is over.”

Bondi pointed to the U.S. Constitution—specifically 18 U.S.C. § 875(c), 18 U.S.C. § 876, and 18 U.S.C. § 115—saying it directly outlaws threats of violence. …

Kirk had himself commented on the notion of “hate speech” in a May 2024 post on social media.

“Hate speech does not exist legally in America. There’s ugly speech. There’s gross speech. There’s evil speech,” Kirk wrote. “And ALL of it is protected by the First Amendment. Keep America free.”

Republicans celebrate Kirk as free speech champion, demand critics be fired

Sep 16, 2025

In the wake of the senseless murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, his political admirers are venerating him as a principled champion of free speech. Ironically, some of the same people are participating in an organized campaign demanding that anyone with a different view of Kirk’s political legacy be fired. This effort has been extremely successful. Dozens of people have been fired for expressing opinions about Kirk that others deem unacceptable. …

On Monday, Vice President JD Vance, who previously praised Kirk for his “willingness to speak openly and debate ideas,” encouraged Americans to “call the employer” of anyone expressing negative opinions about Kirk’s legacy.

Mobs of people, at the direction of elected officials like Vance and a constellation of right-wing influencers, are calling the employers of people who say the wrong thing about Kirk online.

Why free speech can be so contentious

Sep 16, 2025

… The dangers and virtues of free speech have gained new relevance after the killing of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. He has been praised in death by those on the right and beyond as an exemplar of free speech — debating his ideological foes on college campuses and speaking his mind on his podcast. But he has also been held up as an enemy of free speech by his critics — having set up a “watchlist” online of college professors deemed insufficiently deferential to conservatives, explicitly encouraging visitors to intimidate and report them, and having frequently denigrated the democratic value and participation of minorities, women, and his political opponents. Now, politicians, businesses, and media organizations are firing and threatening people who have criticized Kirk after his death — in other words, punishing them for their speech.

Those who are considered on “the left” have long called for the outright censorship of anything they disagree with and what they deem as “hate speech.” Now they are in an uproar when the tables have been turned ── when they are being punished for their statements that are deemed as “hate speech” by the current Republican President, Donald Trump’s Administration.

Now, those on “the right” are calling for ── in the wake of the terrible and heinous murder of Charlie Kirk ── what appears to be even more restrictions on freedom of speech.

I reminded my wife just this morning that if our Founding Fathers had not had the ability to disagree in their non-violent dialogue, this nation might never have been founded. God’s living word warns us that a mighty nation will be sent against “a hypocritical nation” – Isaiah 10:6, KJV. Yes, this is a dual prophecy that speaks of the United States of America.

It is clear that both “the left” and “the right” are being hypocritical here. I witness it every day on social media, as I scroll through my newsfeed on Facebook ── this person or that person is being suspended or fired from their job because they shared or posted something “inflammatory” or “hateful” against Charlie Kirk.

Sadly, we are seeing moves from “the left” and from “the right” against freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

In the United States of America, this is not to happen! Here is the First Amendment to our Constitution ──

However, when it comes to the keeping of the holy Sabbath, or opposing the LGBTQ+ agenda, speaking out against nonmoral issues ── such as being forced to pay for abortions through your healthcare coverage, or during the COVID-19 pandemic, governmental restrictions came upon churches, demonstrating that many governmental leaders are unwilling to uphold the US Constitution  ── Americans have been losing our religious rights all throughout this 21st century.

Of course, I believe that the negative comments, the “inflammatory” and “hateful” rhetoric against Charlie Kirk, is inappropriate and completely uncalled for. But hassling and or causing a loss of income against those who do that ── especially by the U.S. federal government ── will only encourage this as a precedent in the future.

Sadly, however, according to God’s living word, even more censorship and banning online will happen.

Yes, if it hasn’t affected you yet ── it will.

Now… if this can happen in the great United States of America ── a nation that supposedly prides itself on its freedom of speech, written down in a binding document ── called the Constitution of the United States, what is happening elsewhere?

Well… It’s occurring elsewhere also. God’s living and immutable word is clear ── a Catholic-led European leader will rise up, reorganize ── a reorganized European “United States of Europe” that will cause the whole world to be amazed. Dissent shall not be tolerated! (cf. Revelation 13:15-18).

The Prophet Amos was inspired to record for us ──

“’ Behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord GOD, ‘That I will send a famine on the land, Not a famine of bread, Nor a thirst for water, But of hearing the words of the LORD. 12) They shall wander from sea to sea, And from north to east; They shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD, But shall not find it.’” – Amos 8:11-12.

So, in this dual prophecy, His living word tells us that the days are coming when the word of the Eternal One will not be heard. And, that appears to be because God’s living Word, Truth, and Plan will be taken down from the Internet. Certainly, in the 21st century, the Internet is accessed by our peoples in every nation, country, province, and region of the world! Internet restrictions and or suspensions, or outright removal of God’s truth, are coming.

Censorship and other actions from the U.S. government, as well as “Big Tech,” and others essentially point to the reality that this is occurring ── and that it is happening quickly!

Our Lord Jesus Christ warned us ──

“ … ‘ the night is coming when no one can work.’ – John 9:4.  □
