What Are the Seven Spirits Before God’s Throne?

Ai-generated

by Leonard V Johnson

Surely, this question can be among our Think About This… series. Have you ever wondered WHO or WHAT the seven Spirits are? They are spoken of in the 1st chapter of the Book of Revealing. Here, after a series of visions, John was told by our Lord Jesus Himself, ‘Write the things which you have seen, and the things which are, and the things which will take place after this.’ Our beloved Apostle John wrote ──

“John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, 5) and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the FIRSTBORN FROM THE DEAD, and the Ruler over the kings of the earth.” – Revelation 1:4-5.

The Jamieson Fausset and Brown Commentary, a Protestant viewpoint, doesn’t have much to say about Revelation 1:4 ──

“The Holy Spirit in His sevenfold (i.e., perfect, complete, and universal) energy. Corresponding to ‘the seven churches.’ One in His own essence, manifold in His gracious influences. The seven eyes resting on the stone laid by Jehovah (ch. 5:6). … seven the number of God’s revelation in the world.” 1

Matthew Henry’s Bible Commentary online, another Protestant viewpoint, concerning Revelation 1:4-8 ──

“There can be no true peace, where there is not true grace; and where grace goeth before, peace will follow. This blessing is in the name of God, of the Holy Trinity, it is an act of adoration. The Father is first named; he is described as the Jehovah who is, and who was, and who is to come, eternal, unchangeable. The Holy Spirit is called the seven spirits, the perfect Spirit of God, in whom there is a diversity of gifts and operations. The Lord Jesus Christ was from eternity, a Witness to all the counsels of God.” 2

Well … as usual, they are wrong.

The overall majority of biblical scholars see the seven Spirits as representing the Holy Spirit’s complete attributes ── like wisdom, understanding, counsel, might, knowledge, and fear of the Lord. They claim that it’s like God has this full toolkit of spiritual power right there at the center of everything. And what I have noticed is that most Protestant sources just continue down this path.

Now, regarding the “Him who is and who was and who is to come,” the overall majority of biblical scholars contribute this to God the Father. Notice this source ──

“God is called ‘He that is, and was, and is to come’, … That title is here given to the Father alone.” 3

And here’s another Protestant source pointing out that the seven Spirits represent the Holy Spirit ──

“The source of grace and peace is the entire Trinity, Grace and peace come from the seven Spirits, that is, from the sevenfold Spirit on the Messiah …” 4

However, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, identifies Himself * as the “Him who is and who was and who is to come” in verse 8 ──

’ I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’

In truth, the seven Spirits are angelic and thus DO NOT represent any so-called seven attributes of the Holy Spirit.

Yes… sadly, if you’re just sitting there among the pews in your Sunday-going Catholic or Protestant church, and you’re listening to this minister read to you whatever interpretation he wants to provide to you and you don’t open up your Bible and research it yourself… then… yes, you’re gonna go right along with the crowd.

The LORD God reminds us ──

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” – 1 Peter 3:15, KJV.

Brethren, are you able to do this using our Lord Jesus’ own words, or do you rely on man’s?

Now to be fair, there are some Protestant sources that don’t believe that the seven Spirits are the attributes of the Holy Spirit, e.g., ──

“And from the seven spirits which are before His throne] This fact that they are "before," or in the presence of, God's Throne, shows that they occupy the position of servants (see 1 Kings 1-:8), and of created beings (4:5, 10; 7:9, 15; 8:2; 11:4, 16; 12:10; 14:3, 5, 10; 20:12). …

angels are constantly represented as occupying this position.” 5

Again, our Lord Jesus Christ, Himself answers WHO and WHAT the seven Spirits are ──

’ The mystery of the seven stars which you saw in My right hand, and the seven golden lampstands: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands which you saw are the seven churches.’ – Revelation 1:20.

This divine knowledge even flew over the head of AI when I tried explaining this to it. It responded ──

“AH! That’s an interesting angle! So, you’re seeing these angels as vessels of God’s spirit, which is why they’re called spirits? That’s a pretty cool interpretation!” 6

The seven stars are angels as our Lord Jesus clearly states; the seven Spirits are angels. There are not seven separate “attributes” to the Holy Spirit, nor are there seven Holy Spirits. There are 91 separate verses in the New King James Version that has the expression “THE Holy Spirit.” The New Testament speaks of “the Holy Spirit” in a singular term.

Let us notice again verse 8 of Revelation 1 ──

’ I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, … who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.’

Here we see that our Savior, High Priest, and Advocate refers to Himself as the One “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” So, letting God’s living word interpret itself, brethren, this also helps show us that verse 4 is not referring to our Heavenly Father.

Turning in our Bibles to chapter 5 of the Book of Revelation, notice verse 6 ──

“And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the FOUR LIVING CREATURES, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having SEVEN HORNS AND SEVEN EYES, which are THE SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD sent out into all the earth.” – Revelation 5:6.

Ai-generated

Notice also Revelation 4 ──

“Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. 3) And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. 4) Around the throne were twenty-four elders sitting clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. 5) And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. SEVEN LAMPS OF FIRE were burning before the throne, which are THE SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD.” – Revelation 4:2-5.

Returning again to The Book of Destiny, the Roman Catholics, while claiming that the seven Spirits is the Holy Spirit, they also claim ──
“These seven spirits are the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit according to Isaias (XI.2). They symbolically represent the union of the Holy Spirit with the Lamb.” 7
There is a problem with that interpretation, however. Let’s notice God’s living word regarding this ──

“There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots. 2) The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him, The Spirit of wisdom and understanding, The Spirit of counsel and might, The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.” – Isaiah 11:2.

It’s important to note that each time the word “Spirit” appears here, including with multiple attributes, IT IS SINGULAR. The list that comes after “the Spirit of the LORD” is basically describing attributes of God the Father.

Notice the glorious attributes of the Holy Spirit ──

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23) gentleness, self-control. …” – Galatians 5:22, 23.

Here are 9 separate attributes.

Notice also, when the glorious gifts of the Holy Spirit is spoken of, they too add up to 9 ──

“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5) There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. 6) And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. 7) But the manifestations of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. 8) for to one is given THE WORD OF WISDOM through the Spirit, to another THE WORD OF KNOWLEDGE through the same Spirit, 9) to another FAITH by the same Spirit, to another GIFTS OF HEALINGS by the same Spirit, 10) to another THE WORKING OF MIRACLES, to another PROPHECY, to another DISCERNING OF SPIRITS, to another DIFFERENT KINDS OF [LANGUAGES], to another THE INTERPRETATION OF [LANGUAGES]. 11) But one and the same spirit works all these things, …” – 1 Corinthians 12:4-10, 11.

So, not only do they not add up to seven, but there is “ONE AND THE SAME SPIRIT.” So, not only are the Protestants wrong, so too is the Roman Catholics.

Our Lord and Savior’s Church ── it’s His Church; He founded it (Matthew 6:18), is consistent with the living word of the Eternal One.

The seven Spirits, and the seven lamps of fire, are symbolic of angelic beings. □

* Yes, I have been wrong in this biblical understanding. I, too, have stated and written before that the "Him who is and who was and who is to come: is speaking of God the Father, e.g., Revelation - A Book of the Past and the Future (Part I). I stand corrected in the sight of the Lord.

We Stand Firm On God’s Word

by GC LaMar

I write this based upon my own personal observations compelled by the truth of God’s living word.

After much research and prayer, I’ve come to sobering conclusions regarding certain church organizations with which I once fellowshipped. This isn’t about causing division — it’s about standing firm on God’s Word.

The Apostle Paul warned, “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4) and they will turn their ears away from THE TRUTH, and be turned aside to fables.” – 2 Timothy 3:3-4.

THE CALL TO SEPARATE OURSELVES

The LORD God’s living word is clear: “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 15) And what accord has Christ with Belial? Or what part has a believer with an unbeliever?” – 2 Corinthians 6:14-15.

When a church organization that once stood firm on biblical guidance begins to compromise with worldliness, we must choose obedience to “the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints” – Jude 1:3 over any loyalty to an organization or institution that has knowingly departed from “sound doctrine.”

The Apostle Paul has declared, “Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18) For those who are such do not serve the Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple.” – Romans 16:17-18.

Women In Leadership. What Does God’s Word Say?

Some church organizations have introduced women preachers and teachers in direct contradiction to God’s living word. These church organizations are trying to appease popular sentiment, but are doing nothing more than losing their spiritual backbone.

The Apostle Paul clearly wrote, “Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. 35) And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.” – 1 Corinthians 14:34-35.

Again, writing to Timothy, “And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. 13) For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14) And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.” – 1 Timothy 2:12-14.

This is not about misogyny──women are very precious “being heirs together of the grace of life” – 1 Peter 3:7. It’s about order, obedience, and structure to the LORD God’s well-established structure for mankind. As Paul explains, “But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” – 1 Corinthians 11:3. There is the LORD God’s structure for mankind.

But, when we call something by another name to avoid the living truth of God, we are deceiving ourselves, “’ Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!’” – Isaiah 5:20.

WORLDLINESS HAS ENTERED THE CHURCH OF GOD

There has been a blending of worldly entertainment with worship, which has been grieving the Spirit. We are told, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16) For all that is in the world──the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life──is not of the Father but is of the world.” – 1 John 2:15-16.

When churches of God embrace this world’s ways, i.e., its music, its entertainment culture, even including celebrating its pagan festivals under the cover of “Christianity” ── they have departed from holiness.

“Therefore ‘Come out from among them And be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, And I will receive you.’ – 2 Corinthians 6:17.

Truly, truly, there have been the Lord’s ordained Feast of Tabernacles where costume parties were being held. Now, keep in mind that the Feast of Tabernacles and Halloween are very close to each other on the Gregorian calendar. There was a minister and his wife dressed as a magician and a witch at one of the Feast of Tabernacles “costume parties.” Ponder on that.

If you are truly obedient to the LORD God, then you know what God thinks of that. To me, it’s terrible. God’s living word declares, “’ There shall not be found among you ANYONE who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer.’” – Deuteronomy 18:10. Those are abominations unto the LORD God!

The Apostle James asks pointedly, “Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” – James 4:4.

Our Lord Jesus Himself said, ’ No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.’ – Matthew 6:24.

Discerning the fruits of man

Our Lord Jesus teaches us, ’ You will know them [false prophets and false teachers] by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? 17) Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18) A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit.’ – Matthew 7:16-18.

When a church organization or a church’s leadership, or its members, consistently display worldly attitudes rather than “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, faith, meekness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23), you must take notice.

Christ Jesus warned of those who “have a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!” – 2 Timothy 3:5. He has also warned us, ’ Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.’ – Matthew 7:15.

The Apostle John wrote, “They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.” – 1 John 2:19.

Standing for truth in Godly Love

I share this with you not in worldly anger, but in grief and in warning. “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” – Ephesians 5:11.

We should not remain silent when the word of God is being compromised!

The Apostle Paul commanded Timothy, “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.” – 2 Timothy 4:2. Again, the Apostle Paul to Titus, a true son in our common faith, “This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply that they may be sound in the faith.” – Titus 1:13.

For those who seek wholeheartedly genuine biblical teaching: be diligent. “Test [prove] all things; hold fast what is good. 22) Abstain from every form of evil.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22.

Search for congregations of the Church of God that hold firm to God’s living word without any compromises, where God’s word──not church or worldly culture, trends, or human reasoning──is the final authority. To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” – Isaiah 8:20.

THE LORD GOD’S STANDARD HAS NOT CHANGED

There are some who call faithfulness to biblical standards “old-fashioned” or “outdated.” But the LORD God’s living word declares, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. 9) Do not be carried about with various and strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them.” – Hebrews 13:8-9.

Our Lord Jesus says, ’ Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.’ – Matthew 24:35.

I personally have noticed there are a lot of modern churches of God with a great lack of godly discipline, a great lack of decency, and a great quantity of filthiness.

“But fornication and all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; 4) neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving thanks.” – Ephesians 4:3-4.

What was the living truth of God in the apostolic era remains true today. We do not update God’s word to fit the times we are living in; we conform ourselves to God’s living word. “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” – Romans 12:2.

The LORD God had established great Church leadership in the early years of the 20th century as a great guide for us in the 21st century. But, because of a “falling away” into laziness, lack of discipline, a desire to be unkept slobs and slothful, we are now seeing ministries of slouches──ministries of pathetic representation.

e.g., if your minister is going to be dressed down and look like a beach bum, or appear before the congregation as past ministers have appeared, then… keep this in mind… that man represents Jesus Christ. That man is displaying his disciplined efforts for the ministry. As such, uniforms are important as a sign of discipline, unity, and a representation of a position. There was a time when you could easily recognize a person's position by what they were wearing, i.e., police officers dressed like the television show Adam-12. Classy and easily recognizable. Today, police officers dress like they’re in the military. School uniforms have changed drastically over time,  reflecting the changing socio-political landscapes and pedagogical philosophies. It’s becoming a sign of lacking. And the ministry is no different. They too are becoming like the modern world.

Over time, the clothing of insurance agents has changed significantly. Initially, agents typically wore suits and ties, with women often in skirts and blouses. Today, many agents have opted for jeans and polo shirts. A minister used to wear a suit and tie because he represented an office of position.

The rebellious-spirited worldly types continue to creep in with their philosophies and their ideologies. In this modern age that we are living in, we should represent what our position is. Well… maybe it’s just me, I’m a super strict disciplinarian. I believe in discipline to the hilt. I have no tolerance for slothfulness and slobs. I do not like it. And, I do not like to be around them. I do not like their demeanor and their lacking.

I’ve known family members who were like that, and I avoided them. As I said, it could be a personal thing ── and probably is ── but I remember how it used to be when people as a whole were disciplined in the Church of God and carried themselves with pride, dignity, and honor.

Today, most don’t seem to care. Does anybody care anymore? That’s what the problem is! And it bothers me──it bothers me──to the core.

God’s living word warns, “’ His watchmen are blind, They are all ignorant; They are all dumb dogs, They cannot bark; Sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. 11) Yes, they are greedy dogs Which never have enough. And they are shepherds Who cannot understand; They all look to their own way, Every one for his own gain, From his own territory.’” – Isaiah 56:10-11.

Some mockingly say of people like me ── they “just want to hang on to that old-time religion. Well, that’s what was taught 50-some years ago out in Pasadena.”

Well, brethren, I’d love to have that “old-time religion” that was in the Body of Christ before the sluggard generation and the ministry of ministers came along!

“Do not remove the ancient landmark Which your fathers have set.” – Proverbs 22:28.

Also, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls” – Jeremiah 6:16.

There are church organizations that are politicizing the Church of God, trying to bring in modernized political ideologies, literally acting nearly as though they’re voting, every so many years, for their ministers to determine whether or not they should stay in the church. How absurd!

Who is man to think he can judge the anointed of God? The LORD God says, “’ Do not touch My anointed ones, And do My prophets no harm.’” – Psalm 105:15.

Even David had refused to harm a hair on King Saul’s head ── even when he had the opportunity to do so, saying, “’ The LORD forbid that I should do this thing to my master, the LORD’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.’” – 1 Samuel 24:6.

Those church organizations are a joke. They produce a lot of philosophy, ideologies, and spiritual decay.

We are warned, “’ Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.” – Colossians 2:8.

Those church organizations have left the faith once for all delivered to the saints and have invented a worldly, modernized, propagandized manner of modern religion into the Church of God ── which is of the devil, and most are blinded to it.

“For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14) And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15) Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.” – 2 Corinthians 11:13-15.

A final word

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” – 1 John 4:1.

I beseech thee: choose carefully where you plant your spiritual roots. Seek congregations of the Church of God that fear God more than they fear man’s opinions, that uphold God’s living word without apology, and that display genuine spiritual fruits.

“If it seems evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve … but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” – Joshua 24:15.

The Apostle Peter and the other apostles said, “We ought to obey God rather than men.” – Acts 5:29. And the Apostle Paul exhorted, “Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong.” – 1 Corinthians 16:13.

May the LORD God grant you all wisdom, discernment, and courage to stand for truth in these drastically changing times. “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” – Ephesians 6:13.

’ Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.’ – John 17:17. □

What is meant, ‘You observe days and months and seasons and years’?

In this Think About This… let’s talk about, ‘You observe days and months and seasons and years’? Because there are a great many who do not properly understand the Apostle Paul’s admonition in Galatians chapter 4, and verse 10, against the observance of days, months, seasons, and years. What was it that the Apostle Paul was talking about? Well… let’s see and hear what God’s Spirit has to say.

So, here is what the Apostle Paul wrote under inspiration ──

“But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods. 9) Now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be bondage? 10) You observe days and months and seasons and years.” – Galatians 4:8-10.

What Days?

Let us notice that this chapter four begins with the Apostle Paul addressing the Jews. In verse three, he addresses the Jews as “we” because he was a Roman citizen, but he was also a Jew from the tribe of Benjamin. He was born into a devout Jewish family in the city of Tarsus. He received his education under Gamaliel ── a first-century Jewish rabbi and a leader in the Jewish Sanhedrin. But then he was taught directly from our Lord Jesus Christ in Arabia for three years.

But notice in verse six, the Apostle Paul changes from the Jews to the Gentile converts. He doesn’t use the word “we,” but rather “you.”

“But then, indeed, when you did not know God, …”

The Jews there in the first century knew God, but the Gentiles did not know God and were serving and worshiping those by nature that were not gods. Our Lord Jesus, speaking to the Samaritan woman at the well ── a Gentile ──

’ You worship what you do not know; …’ – as in, worshiping those which by nature are not gods. “ …’ we [our Lord Jesus being a Jew] know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews.’ – John 4:22.

So, returning again to the Book of Galatians, let’s continue ──

“ … you served those which by nature are not gods. 9) But now after you have known God, … how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage?”

So, these Gentile converts to whom the Apostle Paul was writing this epistle were not Jews. They, before they came to know God, or rather are now known by God, were cut off from God ── they were serving those which by nature were not gods. In fact, the Gentiles ── the nations and peoples that were all around the land of Judah ── were worshiping:
  • Baal. A Canaanite storm and fertility god.
  • Asherah. Considered the consort of Baal. A goddess of fertility and motherhood.
  • Molech. A Canaanite god that is associated with human sacrifice.
  • Chemosh. A Canaanite god mentioned in the Old Testament, associated with fertility and agriculture.
  • Ashtoreth. A goddess worshiped in ancient Canaan, linked to fertility and agriculture.
They were serving and worshiping demons (cf. Leviticus 17:7; Deuteronomy 32:17; 1 Corinthians 10:20-21), not the living God. False prophets and religious teachers were coming up among them, perverting the living word of God, beguiling them to turn again to their former ways. The Apostle Paul was shocked ── he was afraid for them, lest he had labored for them in vain. They were departing from the living Word of God, the Truth of God, and the Plan of God to the weak and beggarly elements, placing them in bondage once again. Returning once again to the observance of days and months and seasons and years.

So, it wasn’t that they were returning again to the Lord's feasts and holy days; they had not been keeping or celebrating them before the Apostle Paul had taught them.

What Is “Times”?

Let’s turn in our Bible to Leviticus 19, and verse 26 ──

“’ You shall not eat anything with the blood. You shall not observe times * nor practice witchcraft.’” – NET.

“’ There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that uses divination, or an observer of times, or a fortuneteller, or a witch. … 14) For these nations whom you shall possess hearkened to observers of times and to diviners; but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so.’” – Deuteronomy 18:10, 14, NET.

The Apostle Paul forbade pagan practices. To observe “times” was a pagan practice often attached to heavenly bodies ── such as stars, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and even galaxies ── used to determine pagan calendars and their religious seasons.

According to the Catholic Chrysostom (who many apparently thought John, Bishop of Constantinople and Antisemite, was a captivating speaker, he did not understand God’s living word, nor did he properly explain it), he wrote, “Many were ſuperſtitiouſly addicted to the Obſervation of Times, and made Divination and Conjectures upon them; as if they ſpent the New-Moon in Mirth and Pleaſure, the whole Year would be proſperous and lucky to them. … they were uſed in the Celebration of theſe Times to ſet up Lamps in the Market-Place.” 1

Also, David Hutton Webster, who was a distinguished scholar who served as Professor of Anthropology and Sociology at the University of Nebraska from 1907 to 1933, wrote, “The festivals of the dead, observed in classical antiquity, were marked by taboos. Among the Greeks, the rites took place on the so-called αποφραδες ἡμέραι (which means, ominous days) … accompanied by complete idleness and cessation of business.” 2

The Apostle Paul was worried that these Gentile converts were returning to their former pagan rituals and celebrations.

The Apostle Paul was denouncing those vain and abominable practices! The LORD God says to us, “ … ‘take heed to yourself that you are not ensnared to follow them, … and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’ 31) You shall not worship the LORD your God in that way; …’” – Deuteronomy 12:29-31.

Also, in connection with pagan idolatry were numerous “days” observed as penitential festivals.

“The taboos which at Rome invested the lunar phases appear to have lingered into the historic age under yet another guise. Among the [ominous days] (dies religiosi; which means religious days in Italian) of the Roman calendar were those following the Kalends, Nones, and Ides. The thirty-six dies postriduani (the days after tomorrow) were regarded as unsuitable for many purposes, both public and private. … We are told that they owed their unlucky quality to a pronouncement of the Senate and pontiffs, in consequence of the grave defeat of the Allia on the 18th of Quinctilis (July).” 3

“In the old Roman calendar, out of three hundred and fifty-five days, nearly one third (one hundred and nine) were marked as nefasti (ominous), that is, as unlawful for judicial and political business. These days belonged wholly to the gods, while eleven more days of the year were shared by the divine and the human inhabitants of the city. … As the Roman passion for holidays and their attendant spectacles increased, we find the number of days devoted to them rising from sixty-six in the reign of Augustus to eighty-seven in that of Tiberius, and, under Marcus Aurelius, to a hundred and thirty-five. By the middle of the fourth century, their number had reached one hundred and seventy-five.”

So, no wonder that the Apostle Paul spoke of “days” to the Romans and to the Greeks!

And truly, look at how many of the people of this present evil age continue to keep and celebrate these pagan “ominous days”! Such as Samhain, Halloween, Yule, and Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (known today as Christmas)!

Also, “Months and Years”

The Apostle Paul ── inspired by the LORD our God ── was also condemning the pagan customs of observing “months and years”

“The Athenian calendar contained about 60 festival days during which the administration of public affairs, and all regular business, was suspended. These included, in Gamelion (January), the Lenaia, or wine feast in celebration of Dionysus (or Bacchus); in Anthesterion (February), the Anthesteria of Dionysus, the Diasia of Zeus, …” 5 and so forth and so on. “Roman Festivals … Among the most ancient were the Lupercalia to celebrate Lupercus (fertility); the Equiria (Marital); the Palilia (a spring festival for the purification of the flocks and herds); the Ludi Magni, and the great winter solstice festival, the Saturnalia, …” 6

The Apostle Paul was warning Gentile converts not to return to these pagan practices of observing days, months, times, and years.

What Festivals and Sabbaths Does the LORD Hate?

Many people claim that God’s living word in the Old Testament claims that He hates His sabbaths and festivals! This is unequivocally not true! The LORD says, “’ I hate, I despise your feast days, And I do not savor your sacred assemblies.’” – Amos 5:21. He also tells us, “’ Your New Moons and your appointed feasts My soul hates; They are a trouble to Me, I am weary of bearing them.’” – Isaiah 1:14.

Here, the LORD our God is not speaking of His ordained and divine feasts and holy days, but rather man-appointed New Moon celebrations, and their appointed feasts that were being observed in the kingdom of Israel.

Several chapters within God’s living word are devoted to the condemnation of the children of Israel breaking the Sabbaths and festivals that the LORD God had given. Be sure to read Ezekiel 20:12-26.

“’ The word of the LORD came to me, saying, … 26) ‘Her priests have violated My law and profaned My holy things; they have not distinguished between the holy and unholy, nor have they made known the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they have hidden their eyes from My Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them.’” – Ezekiel 22:17, 22.

The children of Israel ── even up to this present day ── have not continued in the observance of His Sabbaths. They refused then, and they refuse now, His judgments and statutes! They would rather keep and celebrate pagan idolatrous festivals that all the other nations celebrate. Our secular history shows us this!

The LORD God has preserved for us a record of just such a change in God’s law, statutes, judgments, and ordinances ── when the kingdom of Israel was divided.

[King] Jeroboam ordained a feast on the fifteenth day of THE EIGHTH MONTH, like the feast that was in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. … 33) So he made offerings on the altar which he had made at Bethel on the fifteenth day of THE EIGHTH MONTH, in the month which he had devised in his own heart. …” – I Kings 12:32, 33.

That was the beginning steps in which the kingdom of Israel began to depart from the Lord’s Law.

Thereafter, the kingdom of Israel altered the New Moons and changed God’s Sacred Calendar. They exchanged the LORD's Sabbaths for pagan days involved in sun worship ── as in Sunday. The kingdom of Israel, celebrating the pagan feasts of Baal, turned them into rest days according to the statutes of the kings ──

“For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt [with Amenhotep II and Ramses II being the most commonly suggested candidates]; and they had feared other gods, 8) and had walked in the statutes of the nations whom the LORD had cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.” – 2 Kings 17:7-8.

The LORD God has never hated nor abolished the feasts of the LORD. But the LORD our God does hate all the different days and months and seasons and years that the nations of Israel continue to keep and celebrate! □
